Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle

Yahoo!, with headquarters at Sunnyvale, California, USA, started as a collection of links of two students in 1994. People like me who used the internet before the year 2000 can hardly imagine that there were no internet search services. Therefore, collecting interesting websites was quite common. Even AltaVista, the first robot-based search engine, was only founded in the mid 90’s.

The founders received their first venture capital in 1995. In 1996 Yahoo! went public.

Yahoo! is the most used website worldwide. Based on their search service, Yahoo! succeeded in offering the users varied services from different sectors. In my opinion, Yahoo! still serves as an example for numerous internet portals.

However, the recent activities have been determined by an anti-Google attitude. This can be seen in the takeover of several search services like AltaVista and Alltheweb as well as the Sponsored Link platform Overture. In short, this competition can be described as “Search (Google) vs. portal (Yahoo!).”

Which one will make it? What do you think?
